Principal's Message: May

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe, but it is time to begin planning for next year, which means it is time for my annual May message about the class placement process.  I know that one of your concerns will be placement of your child with a new classroom and teacher next year, so I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you what goes on.  I can assure you that a great deal of time and care has been and will be devoted to this process.  The teachers, Dr. Hosn, and I meet to initially group the children into tentative classes.  In order to construct the best possible learning environment for your child, we balance the classes with the following considerations:

  • Boy-girl ratio
  • Learning styles
  • Leadership and participation
  • Second language learners
  • Balance of students with special needs including academic, social or emotional
  • A mix of students from previous year’s classes (which allows for changes in group dynamics)

After this meeting and further discussions, prospective class lists are generated, reviewed, and revised.  If there is room, new Longfellow students are then added to the lists.  When the office staff returns in August, we make adjustments to the classes for students who have moved or for new students.  Your child’s teacher and room assignment will then be mailed to your home during the week prior to the start of school.

With the increase class-sizes, budget constraints and continuing increase of neighborhood children our number of classes at a grade level must be flexible.  In the past, Longfellow has experienced enrollment challenges that resulted in creating combination classes to accommodate our neighborhood students.  Our experience has shown that students greatly benefit from a new mix of classmates and teachers every year, and they tend to make new friends and appropriate emotional adjustments wherever they are assigned.

Please know that we take all information into consideration as class lists are developed, and parents who wish to make the school aware of any child-centered educational need should obtain a “Special Needs Information” form that is available in the office .  However, we do not take teacher requests.  This form must be completed and submitted to the office by May 31, 2013.  We are confident that our class placement process works in the best interest of our students’ education, and we appreciate your support as well as your confidence in our professional decisions.

We are so fortunate to be working with you, our wonderful Longfellow families.  Please call, or stop by whenever you have a question or concern regarding your child’s experiences at Longfellow.

Warmly,

Laurie Murrin, Principal

After School Pickup Procedures

November 27, 2012

Dear Longfellow Families,

We ask you to remember that school is in session from 8:00 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. each day (1:10 p.m. on Thursday).  The gates will be opened daily by the end of the school day to accommodate parents, guardians & child care providers wishing to come on campus to pick up students.  We respectfully request that you wait off campus until the gates are opened.  You may wish to have your child meet you at a designated spot on the large playground in case you are not able to pick them up on time.  This way, they are supervised and less concerned if you are late.  The playground is supervised daily until 3:15 p.m.  After 2:30 p.m. all students need to be picked up from the large playground.

Thank you for understanding our need to keep our students safe and secure and our campus quiet and calm so our teachers can focus on teaching and learning all day at Longfellow.  Should you have any questions, please feel free to call our office at your convenience.

In appreciation,

Laurie Murrin,

Principal

LONGFELLOW ATTENDANCE UPDATE

LONGFELLOW ATTENDANCE UPDATE

Congratulations Longfellow Lions for having the highest attendance rate for all elementary schools in Long Beach for the 2011-2012 school year.   Thank you to our school community for supporting our students’ efforts to be at school every day.

It is our school goal for every Longfellow Lion to earn at least one perfect trimester attendance award.  However, we realize there are valid reasons for students to miss school. Absences due to illness, family funerals, religious holidays, and doctor and dentist appointments are excused.  However, according to state law, absences for any other reason are unexcused.

After 3 unexcused absences or tardies in excess of 30 minutes, parents will receive a letter that notifies them that their child is being “reported to the Long Beach Unified School District as a truant from school pursuant to the provisions of Section 48260 of the Education Codes.”  So if your child has three or more unexcused absences, or tardies of more than 30 minutes, you can expect to receive a “truancy letter” the week of November 1st. Attendance notes are due the day the child returns to school.  If you have attendance questions, contact our attendance clerk, Mrs. Leslie Goetz, or our counselor, Dr. Rima Hosen.
