Please register!

Parents, if you haven't already done so, please register on Schoolloop.  It is a very effective communication tool for us to use regarding your child.  You need your child's id number.  You can find it on ParentVue or I can give it to you.

If you have any green plants that need a home, we would love a few for Room 25 (Riley) :)

VIPs in the Classroom

If you would like to volunteer in the classroom, you need to be a registered VIP.  This is also necessary for chaperoning any field trips.  The process can take a few weeks so please plan accordingly.  You can pick up an application in the front office.

I will need a VIP who can work on a consistent basis to come in on Wednesdays to help stuff the Wednesday Folders.  Please let me know if you are available.  You can email me, psarmiento@, or stop by the classroom.

Once we have established our classroom routines, I will need more VIPs to help in the classroom.

HOMEPAGE: Welcome to Room 28104 and the 2018-19 School Year!

If everyone in our class had YOUR ATTITUDE,

what type of place would it be?

**Choose to be positive, supportive, empathetic,

and accepting of others.**

Welcome to Room 28104 (Riley)

Dear Fourth Grade Students and Parents,

I want to give you a big, warm welcome to Room 28104!  I am so excited to be back in 4th grade and to be YOUR teacher!

I have been teaching at Longfellow since 1999 as a 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade teacher.  Three years ago,  I had the wonderful opportunity to work as a reading intervention teacher.  What a great experience!  I learned so much and I am excited to implement the strategies into our class this year. The experiences I have gained working as a reading intervention teacher will serve us tremendously in our classroom. This is my second year back in 4th grade and I couldn't be happier!

Time that is not spent at school is spent with my family.  I have been married for 25 years to my husband, Mauricio.  We have 4 children: Jake is 23 and is in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Chapman University; Luke is 21 and a senior at University of San Diego studying commercial real estate; Sean is 17 and a senior at Millikan; and Lily is 14 and a freshman at Millikan.

I hope you like running because I have enrolled all of us into the 100 Mile Club!  Yes, 100 miles!!!  We are going to run/walk 3 miles a week and by the end of the year, you will be able to tell all of your friends that you ran 100 miles!  I have done this for the past 8 years with my 4th grade classes. We will cheer each other on and celebrate our accomplishment at the end of the year with a 100 Mile Medal Party.  Before we reach our 100 miles, we will celebrate running 25 miles with a t-shirt that you can wear to school on Fridays, 50 miles with a gold pencil, and 75 miles with a bracelet. I believe running at school helps children to focus and learn better throughout the day.  I can't wait to share this experience with you!

Just like it is important for you to learn as much as you can, it is also important for me to learn as much as I can so we can have a successful year. One way I continue learning is by reading about all the great changes happening in schools and with the curriculum.  I also like to search the computer for activities and lessons that I think you will enjoy. In July, I attended a Literacy Conference in Austin, Texas. I can't wait to share what I learned with you.

I hope you can tell that I am very excited about this year, and I know we will have a great year.  I promise to come to school happy, prepared, and ready to teach.  I also need you to promise to come to school happy, prepared, and ready to learn.  Parents, I will need your support, as well.  Together, we can be sure to make this a successful year for your child.

See you August 29th at Riley Elementary School!

Mrs. Sarmiento :)

If you have any extra puzzles at home, we would like some for our classroom. Thanks!

Room 28104 Supply List

If your kids are anything like mine, they love to buy new school supplies (even the older ones)! The following is a list of supplies that would be beneficial.  It would be best to have these supplies by September 4, 2018.  We will be ready to hit the road running!

  • 4 wide ruled single subject notebooks (blue, red, yellow, green)
  • 4 folders to match the above colors - this will help us hopefully stay organized!
  • 1 homework folder (your choice of color/design)
  • one composition notebook (for novel studies)
  • pencils (Ticonderoga are best but not mandatory)
  • sharpener with a cover
  • colored pencils
  • thin markers
  • crayons
  • ruler
  • highlighters
  • post-it notes (we use these when reading text)
  • scissors
  • glue sticks
  • black Sharpie for labeling
  • red or green correcting pens
  • chapter book at all times - this one isn't optional :)

The supplies in red are the most important.  I can supply the rest, if needed. :)
