       January Principal Letter

    January 7, 2019

    Hello Students, Parents, and Community,

Happy New Year! We have had a great start to 2019, and students are enthusiastic about learning at Longfellow Elementary School. Construction is moving along, and most of the classrooms in Buildings A and B have already received air conditioning, new white boards, ceilings, lighting systems and ceiling mounted projectors. New flooring and cabinetry is now being installed. Once we relocate all offices and kindergarten classrooms to the front of the school, construction teams will begin working on our kindergarten buildings.

We will be holding our second Rules & Procedures Assembly of the year for grades K-5 to make sure that all students understand what it means to have PRIDE. Parents, please ask your students questions such as, “What does it look like to show perseverance in the classroom?” or “What does it look like to show responsibility on the playground?”

In addition, to supporting student interactions at school, we encourage you to speak to your child about the potential danger of the Internet. Although most Social Media sites post age restrictions for use (usually 13 years of age), students disregard those guidelines to post pictures and to chat with friends. The reason most social media services use an age limit of 13 or over is in part because of the COPPA law or Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act which states that any organization or people operating online services (including social media services) are not allowed to collect the personal information of anyone under the age of 13 without parental permission. Please take the time to ask if your child has an account with Facebook, Music.ly, IMVU or similar websites. We encourage you to establish rules and guidelines to ensure the safety of your child while on the Internet at home.

Regular attendance in elementary school sets up the foundation for your child’s entire school career. Our school attendance percentage for the month of December was 95.4%, which is a bit lower than our attendance goal of 97.4%. However, our overall attendance percentage for the year is 96.67% which is just shy of our goal. To add to that, 3rd grade had the highest attendance percentage for the month of December at 96%!!!

Let's make this year a great one!

    Mr. Sigur

    Hola Estudiantes, Padres, y Comunidad,

    Sr. Sigur

    After School Pick-up Procedures

We ask you to remember that school is in session from 8:00 a.m. until 2:05 p.m. M, T, W, & F for grades 1, 2, & 3 and 2:10 p.m. M, T, W, & F for grades 4 & 5 (1:30 p.m. on Thursday for grades 1-5).  The gates will be opened daily by the end of the school day to accommodate parents, guardians & child care providers wishing to come on campus to pick up students.  We respectfully request that you wait off campus until the gates are opened.  You may wish to have your child meet you at a designated spot on the large playground in case you are not able to pick them up on time.  This way, your child is supervised and less concerned if you are late.  The playground is supervised daily until 3:45 p.m.

Children staying on the playground after school may not leave campus for any reason except to go home.  After school students are not to leave campus then decide to return. For example, a student may not leave campus and return with food purchased at a local establishment. Under such circumstances, parents/guardians will be notified and the student’s after school playground privilege may be revoked. However, if the student feels it is necessary to return to the school campus due to safety reasons, the student must go directly to the office and/or speak directly with a coach.

Thank you for understanding our need to keep our students safe and secure and our campus quiet and calm so our teachers can focus on teaching and learning all day at Longfellow.  Should you have any questions, please feel free to call our office at your convenience.

Traffic Safety – A Non-Negotiable Expectation for Our School

Nothing is more important than working together – students, teachers, staff and families – to help maintain safety at Longfellow.  Our school’s programs, including Valet Drop Off (on Bixby Avenue), written reminders, a detailed drop off map in our Longfellow Handbook, Walk to School Wednesdays, adult supervision,  traffic cones and working with our city’s traffic patrol officers are all aimed at helping our Longfellow Lions  return home at the end of the day healthy and safely. We need to continue to work together to make sure that we… Never park in red curb zones, never drop off students in the middle of the street, never speed in our neighborhood, never compromise the safety of our students with unsafe driving habits, and please do not use the Hughes parking lot as a drop-off for our Longfellow students.  Your commitment to traffic safety is essential.  The LBPD also monitors the area to support our traffic safety efforts.  While the morning can be a busy time of day, please leave home with plenty of time so that we never have to compromise the safety of anyone.

    Longfellow Attendance Update

It is our school goal for every Longfellow Lion to earn at least one perfect trimester attendance award.  However, we realize there are valid reasons for students to miss school. Absences due to illness, family funerals, religious holidays, and doctor and dentist appointments are excused.  However, according to state law, absences for any other reason are unexcused.

After 3 unexcused absences or tardies in excess of 30 minutes, parents will receive a letter that notifies them that their child is being “reported to the Long Beach Unified School District as a truant from school pursuant to the provisions of Section 48260 of the Education Codes.”  So if your child has three or more unexcused absences, or tardies of more than 30 minutes, you can expect to receive a “truancy letter” the week of November 1st. Attendance notes are due the day the child returns to school.  If you have attendance questions, contact our attendance clerk, Ms. Diane Eley, or our counselor, Christy Cleveland..

    Registration Information

Registration packets are available daily from 8:00-noon or 1:00-3:00. Items needed to register your child are a birth certificate, proof of residency and immunization record.  For more details about these items, please click on the registration button.

Please take some time to review Longfellow’s uniform policy also known as The Longfellow Lion Look from Head to Toe which is included in this edition of the link. It also is posted on the school website.   Please review the information with your child. In a nutshell, The Longfellow Lion Look from Head to Toe is solid navy, white or red collared tops or Longfellow spirit wear, solid navy bottoms and solid colored outerwear.  One of our biggest efforts is to bring uniformity to outer wear so please plan ahead!
